The human voice, the most expressive and richest in timbral shades, musical instrument, has been used in innumerable modes in the music and songs of the various cultures. From the common sigh, the laughter, and speech, comprising of the hundreds of phonemes that form the languages of the globe, up until the mimicking of the sounds of nature, of machines, or even the other musical instruments.

The rapid evolution of electronic and digital technologies of the 20th and 21st century have entirely and irrevocably altered the understanding of the physical scope of the voice, through new media and interactive technologies. The modern era of the internet and informatics provides the educator/teacher, the researcher and the interpreter of vocal music to view the voice through the scope of anatomophysiology, acoustics and computational analysis, with the additional use of a broader toolkit that utilize scientific knowledge.

By using such novel tools and methods, the aesthetic approach of the “Singing Voice” phenomenon leads toward a scientific methodology of the voice pedagogy and interpretation, based on the respective acoustic and cognitive functions.

The workshop is organized in the frame of the research program ASMA (assistance for students in singing and music aesthetics), with the funding of HFRI. Speakers will be renowned scientists in the voice field, vocal pedagogues, as well as interpreters of various styles of singing (classical, jazz, traditional, byzantine).

The program will include lecture sessions, workshops for vocal educators, and the showcase of new tools for vocal pedagogy. There will be a special session dedicated to the presentation of a collective paper volume titled “Techniques and technologies of the Singing Voice” (edited be A. Georgaki and E. Angelakis), published by the S. Kostarakis publishing house.

The works of the conference will be complemented by evening concerts, featuring speakers of the workshop, in a broad repertory ranging through various expressions of the singing voice in classical, traditional and jazz music.
